earth-hourWorld Wildlife Fund Philippines recently emailed me a report on the impact the Philippines has made during the Earth Hour last month, March 28, 2009. It was a joy to learn that our country ranked number one in the world in the number of cities that participated during the Earth Hour.

Over 15 million Filipinos in 650 major cities and towns
switched off their lights.

This year, the Philippines ranked number one
in the world in the number of cities and municipalities
that participated in Earth Hour 2009.

Together, we made history. Together, we made a difference.

But Earth Hour is just the beginning.
By signing up and turning off, your stand against climate
change will be heard at the UN Climate Summit this December in Copenhagen

where leaders of all countries will discuss absolute greenhouse
gas reductions and how they can help countries like the
Philippines adapt to the escalating impacts of a warming
planet.

If you were to see emergency lights that direct you toward the exits inside a building that is on fire would you resent it or would you appreciate it? If the emergency lighting system of a jet suddenly prompts that it is about to crash and the pilot needs to be ejected, will the pilot ignore the warning or appreciate and obey it?

God has given us commands in His word and whenever God says a negative He always has a positive purpose behind it. He always has a reason. It is not to cause us pain. It is for our protection. God says when we play be the rules you win.

Below are some tips on how to protect your marriage based on principles from God’s Word:

wedding-rings1. Make a commitment to God’s standards

Psalm 119: 9 says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your word.” Once I heard a preacher say, Either the Bible will keep you from sin or sin will keep you from the Bible.” We must first decide in our hearts to follow God’s ways and believe that His ways are right and that they are the best.

2. Magnify the consequences of not following God’s commands

Among other sins, sexual immorality is the one that cuts deeply into a person’s core. 1 Corinthians 6:18 “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body.”

Sex was designed by God and its purpose was to provide enjoyment for the couple committed together in marriage. It unites the couple physically, emotionally and spiritually. So when a person engages in sex with different partners and separates, it creates more than just physical detachment. The emotions and the spirit of a person gets entangled and a big part is destroyed when a separation takes place. This is besides the fact that there are consequences that the children and other relationships in a family endure.

mommy moments

papa-and-jed

This week’s Mommy Moments is particularly hard for me. You see I take around 500 shots a month since the little guy is born, so choosing from amongst the thousands can be pretty challenging for anyone.

Any wife and mother will always find joy when she sees her beloved partner in life sinking beautifully into fatherhood with so much grace like my dear husband does.  For someone who has an absentee father for more than half of his life, he is thoroughly excelling in this area.  Proof that it is ultimately a man’s choice what he decides to be and not be dictated by his past circumstance.  For this matter, whatever kind of family of origin he came from.  I love Jeff more each day for being the kind of man he is and the father that he is to our child. zipline

Erwin and Jeff are aboard the zipline of People’s Park in Tagaytay City. I was not feeling very adventurous during that time, like there is a time I was ever! Haha! It was a good day to enjoy the cool breeze of the city. Our friend Ana who just came home from Singapore a week ago, is soon to leave again on Thursday and we wanted to spend time with her while she’s here.

The original plan was to drive up to Baguio first thing Monday morning and go back home by Wednesday. But because there were unexpected things that happened, like the hubby getting sick, there was no way we were going to do a Suburban extended stay hotel, even if we wanted to. Tagaytay is one place we will always choose to go to whenever we would love to get away from the heat of the Metro. More photos in the upcoming posts.

‘In marriage, there comes a time that a couple’s schedule often is too predictable that you almost can tell what time of the day you will get to bond with your partner. Predictability is not bad. In fact a lot of people I know are wired towards it. But every normal human being, regardless of his type of personality, can make use of spontaneity one time or another.

It has been a stressful time for the hubs. Coming home from camp with an oozing 40 degree Celsius temp until the following day is not really the coolest. He thinks he needs to unwind and get some rest. Our dear friend Ana wants a quick Baguio getaway but talked her  out to switch it to a closer but as breezy destination, Tagaytay. There are plenty of things lined up for us to do this week and a day trip is what we can afford for now.

earth-day

Celebrated every April 22, Earth Day was originally founded by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson in 1970 and has since been practiced all over the world annually.

What can we do for earth day? Since the first Earth Day in April 22, 1970 people around have celebrated by renewing their commitments to do their share in building a healthier and cleaner world not just for those around us, but for the generations to come.

There are handful of ways that you can do today. Plant a tree, volunteer to an event that has to do with Earth Day, et.al. Maybe if you have the resources, choose natural energy in your homes- install solar panels. Organize an event where you live to spread the Earth Day awareness campaign. It does not have to be spectacular. The best thing about it is we actually do not have to wait for April 22 to do our share in taking care of our environment.

It really won’t stop raining these past few days. I have to confess, I am so loving it! I really love the rain more than the sun. I sometimes think that I am a Cullen. Haha! I guess what I love most about it is that we did not have to turn the air conditioning unit on for almost five days now. That is really something. Last week we almost had it on for an entire day because the heat was really crazy. Now, I’m dreading to get hold of our next electricity bill.

Sweet potato (camote tops juice) and lemongrass juice are two of the things I have religiously given my son in the last three days he was down with fever. Well not exactly down, because you could actually miss that he has it, if you won’t feel his skin or check his temperature. I practically had to hold him off from his usual overactive self.

Thanks to the sweet potato tops (camote tops juice) and lemongrass juice that I think helped him fight what he was sick of. I am happy to report that my son has been fever free for more than 24 hours. The last three nights were the craziest for me. I hardly had any sleep, managing my son’s temperature by giving him frequent sponge baths. It was only the first day that the fever will persist for almost the whole day. The days that followed were lower grade ones and were several hours apart.

The only thing I gave him were occasional paracetamol, lemongrass juice and sweet potato juice. Both of the juices he would refer to as his juice medicine. I have not done sweet potato juicing for sometime now because we have kind of gotten stuck to lemongrass juice as our regular family drink. But because there is a valid Dengue scare, I knew we have got to up our chances of being able to manage if it was the case.

sweet potato tops juice

For those of you who have been asking how to make sweet potato tops juice (camote tops juice), here is a post especially dedicated for this recipe.

1. Clean a sheaf of sweet potato tops in a mixture of water with vinegar. This will take out the soil and other dirt particles from the vegetable. I formerly used Sunrider™’s SunSmile® Fruit & Vegetable Rinse, but later figured my trusty vinegar could do the job.
2. Boil the sweet potato tops for at least five minutes. Let it cool.
3. Separate the leaves from the juice. (You can use the sweet potato tops as salad or appetizer)
4. Squeeze in lemon or calamansi juice. The number of calamansi is up to you.
5. Add honey to taste.

6. Refrigerate.

It has been weeks since the weather has been especially cruel. It went to a point that doing a minor chore became exhausting. To give you a better picture, the moment I step out of the bath, without the chance of wiping myself dry, is the time that sweat breaks off my pores. I swear, I could have thought I was having hot flashes!

It was especially hard for me, because juggling multiple tasks alone is not easy in itself. The past weeks, weather was incredibly humid. There was even a heat stroke incident my little guy had to go through. I still count my blessings amidst the crisis, but weather was really that crazy.

Thank God for the rains! It was what we needed. We actually did not have to turn on the air conditioning unit last night, when we almost had it on, 24/7 in the past days. We are really grateful. It would certainly make watching from amongst the extensive Dish network deals more fun. I was just chatting with a friend who works for Dish network and she raves about all this Dish network offers. Too bad we don’t have any similar local cable company like it. This is why we terminated the service of our former provider.

Meanwhile, we rely on the internet for our weekly dose of episodes of our favorite series, 24, Heroes and Prisonbreak. The weather is really conducive that I had to ask permission from the hubs if I could watch them without him. We always watch the episodes together. I am so going to tease him with spoilers. Teehee! Just kidding. This is when I sign off and sit back to watch. Till later!

homeschoolingLess than two months. That’s practically all I have left to decide how we are going to go about our homeschooling set up here at home. The major things that takes up my schedule is the number of hours I work in the laptop, time with the little guy and the chores. Homeschooling should not take so much time everyday, especially so that we are just doing the preschool curriculum. But then again, it will still be an extra task in my already overloaded daily routine.

It really should not be so hard to figure out what should come down and what to do about it. But I still have these nanny issues and some concerns on getting a helper. Before I decided to work from home in 2007, I was a regular employee in one of those International companies in Ortigas.

system-cameraHiring the second nanny (the first one ran away with her boyfriend) was a mistake. My very own eyes witnessed how the one who was suppose to be the caregiver of my son hit my then one year old Jed with a balloon stick. Even with the mark on the child’s arm, she vehemently denied it! Que Horror! This is a nightmare to any parent. I swore that if I would ever have to leave my son to a nanny again, I am going to have one of those security cameras from GE home security. Read the rest of this entry »

After having realized that I average eight blog entries a day, it is actually amazing how I am still able to plurk and connect with fellow bloggers across the world. I should say it could be my way of relaxing, alongside looking into these gorgeous vessel sinks online to replace the one in our lavatory.

Today we rejoice even as the little guys is doing pretty well. I know it does not help that it is extra humid today, but we’re happy enough that his temperature is no longer hitting the fever mark. With that said, I am set to enjoy a good night’s sleep tonight, to catch up on the previous nights lack of.

My little guy started having fever Thursday morning. He had fever (38-39 degrees Celsius) for most of the day until the next day at six in the afternoon.  No cough and colds, no loss of appetite, still bubbly and playful. So we really can’t call it the flu. We brought him to the Pedia Friday morning just to be told that blood tests will not help because fever was just a day old. So if it was Dengue, the test will not come back positive until at least the third day. Today is the third day and Jed has been fever free for twelve hours until another episode of low grade fever came back again at two in the afternoon.

dengue fever

If it was not for the kid on the next block who had Dengue last month, I wouldn’t be as concerned. We don’t have mosquitoes in our home because of our trusty JML pest shield. We got that to get rid of stray roaches and since I bought it a year ago, it did not just get rid of roaches, but millipedes and mosquitoes as well. It was frustrating that our brand new home was infested with millipedes! Now we hardly use anti-mosquito spray anymore, really. This deserves a separate post altogether.

Going back to this Dengue scare, for non-Filipinos, please know that it is not pronounced as “den-goo” as one website claims. It is pronounced as “deŋ-gē, -ˌg━ . Etymology is American Spanish. But we usually pronounce it with a short “e” – den-g-eh. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF), mostly found in the tropics, is spread to human with the bite of female aedes mosquitoes. The virus incubates the human body for 2 to 7 days before it leads to fever.

According to my father (which was later reinforced by some health magazine), these dangerous dengue carrier mosquitoes are only active until ten in the morning. Since then, I have not allowed my son to play or bike around the house, even in the garage before 10:00AM. We certainly make sure we do not have stagnant water around us, but still with a neighbor’s grandson across the block having just had his bout with Dengue, we could not be more careful. But a few days back, my son went out to see his grandma and they stayed outside, came back with mosquito bites around the legs.

These past couple of days was spent reading on this scary disease, its symptoms and cure. Symptoms include: fever, headache, severe joint pain and rash. But I also read that toddlers may have non typical symptoms, so that leaves us clueless for now. We are hoping and praying that what Jed has is just viral. The fever that he has been having since are all six to twelve hours apart and are low grade ones.

I have also been making Sweet Potato Tops (Camote Juice) this last couple of days. There have been a lot of articles that have testified on the potency of Camote juice to cure Dengue. So I thought, if it was Dengue that Jed has,  then he will be cured in no time. Camote tops juice ups the immune system, which helps the body fight the rapid reduction of the blood platelets.

We are praying that Jed will fully recover soon, whatever this is, his pedia said to hope that it is just viral. He sure is getting better by the day. I am just blessed that it was never hard for me to have him take his juice medicine (whether lemongrass or sweet potato tops). Despite of his fever, he still remains the chatterbox, playful boy, ever cooperative with the juices and paracetamol medications that I give him. His appetite remains the same.

As I said in this Plurk page,  I refuse to worry and am confident that God will heal my cutie pie real soon. Thank you so much for those who prayed with us, especially our church family in SBC-Makati.

It has been a while since I last planned a wedding. It is one of the favorite things that I love doing. Turning down a couple of projects these previous months was not really the easiest thing for me. Priorities have got to take their places and doing weddings can really take a lot of time, which I honestly do not have much of.

f4752lrMaybe when the time is right I could get back to doing weddings again and maybe choose with the bride to be her wedding invites and even cook up a bridal shower with her maid of honor. I could even make use of BridalShowerInvitations.bz to help me with that.  They really have pretty and fun designs, detailed and sweet.

Meanwhile, all I can give friends are wedding tips. I even share with them files that could help them decide on the details of their big day.

Sauna day, everyday. This is one of the updates in my timeline in Plurk last week. Working from home is not the most glamorous, I know. I have come in terms with that. But the heat has become so unbearable, that if it was not for the distraction of caring for my cutie pie, who has been with fever since Thursday — I could have gone crazy because of the heat. How I wish we bought a portable air conditioning unit, rather than the window type that we have in our room.

heat-exhaustion-2

The original plan last year was to install another unit here in the parlor, where I hold my office. But there were other things we prioritized — most of them gadgets (essential ones, if I may emphasize). Plus the fact that we actually start paying for our little guy’s tuition fee this coming school year. So there, the a/c unit plan obviously has to be on a standstill. And I am really leaning towards the portable a/c. So we could bring it whichever part of the tiny house we are in.

Meanwhile, with this heat unfailing to remind us that global warming is on, we are so looking foward to our upcoming getaway  in less than a couple of months. We have actually started filling in our checklist- some beach essentials and pool floats lounges.  June may not be the ideal time to go to Boracay. But come to think of it with the weather being so unpredictable (remember those chilly Dec and January nights we had a few months back?) that is caused by global warming, we refuse to be dictated by the weather forecasters. I know December and January are the coolest months here in the tropics. But I have not once worn a sweater during any natural weathered December or January night in my whole 32 years of existence, except for December 2008 and January 2009.
