Advocacy: Donated Clothes, Upcycled to Quilts for Children in Orphanages by @ElectroluxPH and Gawad Kalinga’s Trese

The resilience of the Filipino spirit, I believe, is something that has ushered our country to move forward despite the many odds. From one calamity after another, we have kept our spirits high by helping each other through the age-old concept of Bayanihan.

Last week, I was able to visit the Gawad Kalinga’s Trese Community in Payatas for the first time.  I’ve always been curious about Gawad Kalinga and here was an opportunity to actually learn more about this very inspiring community.

I love how global brand Electrolux has partnered with Gawad Kalinga’s Trese through upcycling unusable clothes that were given for calamity-stricken survivors. Instead of giving away  torn “relief goods,” they are upcycled into quilts for children and newborn babies in orphanages and other communities. How cool is that?

“Electrolux believes that there must be dignity in the clothes that we donate. To make sure that every piece of clothing is in good condition, we will sort out the worn out, unwearable ones, then upcycle them into quilts with the help of Trese” said Andrea Pionilla, Electrolux Marketing Manager. “With this partnership, we aim not only to give quilts to children and new born babies but also another source of livelihood for this Payatas community.”

It was timely that around the time we visited one of the houses that doubles as a “work place” for the sewers, one of the mothers just finished a lovely quilt masterpiece.

Right on! 🙂

It is awe-inspiring how Gawad Kalinga has empowered the people in the Trese Community to be entrepreneurs as they make use of their skills and make a living right in their community. Talk about teaching them how to fish as opposed to giving them fish.  🙂
