Last Sunday, I started a series in our church entitled “Strengthening Your Family”.The purpose of this series is to provide the Biblical foundations about the family and this entry is a part of the first message in the series.
It all starts from the very beginning.Genesis 2:18 says, “The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” And then it goes on to say in verse 24 of that same chapter, “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.”
From these verses we can find two basic principles:
1) Marriage, or the family was God’s idea
Genesis 2:24 is the verse that I use every time I officiate a wedding ceremony. Because, this very important institution in our society, the family, was really God’s idea.It wasn’t the government who established the family. The family wasn’t even just man’s idea, even though sometimes a lot of couples think that because love exists in their relationship, that is enough already and they don’t need anything else, not even God or His principles and ways. But if we look back in the beginning, the family was established by no one else but God.
The second principle that can be found in those passages.
2) We were made for relationships
God finished creating the world and everything in it and in the last verse of the previous chapter it says, “God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” and then He created the first man, Adam and gave him the responsibility to rule over His creation. But interestingly, God notices a deep need in Adam and says for the first time that it is not good for man to be alone.
People were made for people. This is true whether a person is married or single. We all need some deep relationships and caring in our lives.Man was not made to be alone and to be without relationships. That’s probably why the punishment for those who are already serving their sentence in prison is solitary confinement.I mean even in prison, people can still make bad choices and do wrong things, and the punishment they give to those already under punishment is solitary confinement, isolation‚ away from all people, from any relationship and many prisoners who have experienced this say how torturous isolation is.
Knowing these two principles, it is then most logical to say that God knows best for our family, because it was His idea and He created it.That’s why I believe the Bible is very practical and, as what I would often say in church, it is God’s manual for our lives, especially our families. Many people criticize the Bible and are skeptical about it but it doesn’t matter really.Because the principles in His word are true and universal meaning, it applies to all people, in all places, at all times when we break God’s principles, we don’t really break them. They break us – whether we believe them or not because they are true.We will experience the effects of our decisions whether we obey or disobey Biblical principles.
