The custom of sending Valentine cards started in the eighteenth century. It took the place of having to send very expensive gifts. The first valentine cards were all hand made and with original verses. Cards were then later commercially produced and became very popular during the Victorian Era. Earlier in the twentieth century, they went out of fashion for sometime. Romantic Valentine cards came back into fashion 1930’s.

In countries with western influence like ours, Valentine cards are sent to all relatives. Elementary schools spend hours on end having their kids prepare one for their parents and loved ones. Giving flowers, especially red ones, and candies too are also popular.
