With prices of commodities in the Philippines still bullish, finding sources of particular items locally instead of importing, in my opinion, should be prioritized by the government and planned for the long term.
We should take after Brazil which continues to be the world leader when it comes to sugar production. This country has been neck and neck with India in recent years but is expected to retain its leadership for the period of 2007 and 2008. Brazil also exports VHP Sugar (very high polarity sugar), which was an entirely new form of sugar with far greater content of sucrose and less contamination.
I think our country should also find a commodity that the whole nation can export and benefit from and private companies should support small businesses and empower them instead of monopolizing for their own personal gain.
