The fire that struck Laperal Compound (but officially called Lateral Compound by NDCC) yesterday along EDSA, Bgy. Guadalupe Viejo, in Makati City at around 11:59AM affected more or less 2,700 families, left 9 people injured and around 900 houses burned. In the urban setting in Makati, a house usually has at least 3 families living under it depending on the number of rooms it has. Sadly, four families from our church were affected, three of which lost their homes completely without being able to salvage anything.

We opened up our church in Makati for these three families and asked our members and friends to help with used or new clothes, towels, beddings, canned goods, rice and toiletries to help meet their immediate needs. The three families are also part of the Manna Feeding ministry in our church.

I took the liberty to visit the site that was ravaged by the huge fire yesterday which, according to NDCC, had an estimated damage of Php 9 million, and took pictures. As I saw the area, I remembered that a few years back it was also hit by a fire. Most structures then were made of wood but now, there were many structures made of concrete. But even though that is the case, the are is really a fire hazard since houses are very close to each other and there is no access inside for fire trucks. According to people I’ve talked to who live in the area, yesterday was the fourth time a fire hit Lateral Compound. My wife first learned about this particular fire via Twitter, wherein @MMDA mentioned about a fire within the area. We started calling one of the members in our church who we know lives there.

As I ponder upon this, I feel burdened for the families affected, not just the ones who are part of our congregation because for them, going back to that area will be another risk to take knowing that fire could hit that area again after some time. But with the high cost of living in Makati, they are left with no other place to stay unless other people or organizations help them get relocated to a safer and affordable place of residence without greatly affecting their children’s schooling (Makati City residents enjoy free education for their children) and their work by getting relocated somewhere so far.

I know no single organization or person can help all these fire victims. But as followers of Christ congregating in Makati, our church will try its best to help the families that we can help, starting with those who are part of our ministry. We thank our church members, friends in the Philippines and from around the world who have helped already and who are planning to send additional help for these families. May God bless us all as we continue to extend blessing upon the families who lost their homes from the fire yesterday.

Our minds can store about a hundred trillion facts and yet most of us only think about ten thousand thoughts a day. That’s about three and a half million a year and we only use about ten percent of our minds ever. Our mind is a special gift from God.

How do we stay mentally fit so that we’re alert and bright so that all of our lives we can make the most of this gift that God has given to us — our mind?

Guard your mind. Control what you allow into your mind. As they say in the computer industry: “Garbage in, Garbage out.”

2 Corinthians 10: 5 says, “bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ…”

We must guard our minds from material like poison (pornography, witchcraft, trashy novels or movies, etc.).

Romans 16:19 says, “Be wise (excellent) in what is good, and simple (innocent) concerning evil.”

I read before that the average television is on seven hours and seven minutes a day in the average home. If you’re an average person, you watch about 1000 hours of TV a year. That means if you live to be 65, you will amass nine and a half solid years of TV viewing.

On the other hand, if you went to Bible study — Sunday School — every Sunday of your life from day 0 to day 65 that would only equal four and a half months of Bible teaching.

We also must guard our mind from “stuffing”. These are things that are not necessarily bad for us but they are not necessary.

1 Corinthians 10:23 says, “”Everything is permissible”-but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible”-but not everything is constructive.”

What we must allow into our minds are things that we call “brain food” (things that inspire you, teach you, help you grow, teach you a skill, make you a better person) and, of course, the Word of God.

Joshua 1:8 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

We have to realize that we have to decide what we’re going to fill our minds with because it’s going to come out of our lives.

Also, if you want to be a mentally fit person you must have a “never-stop-learning” attitude. You must be open to new ideas, humble (teachable) and enthusiastic. If you want to be mentally fit you wake up in the morning with the attitude, “Lord, teach me something new today. Help me to be mentally alert. Lord, I realize that there are some tremendous experiences in life that You’re going to create and design just for me today. Help me to learn from those things.”

Some practical things to do are:

1. Schedule some time to think each week. Sit down, get alone, get quiet, and think. A lot of times we’re just too busy to think. But if you’re a leader — in your home, business, if you have that responsibility, you ought to be spending a minimum of ten percent of your time thinking about your job. Not working at it, but thinking about it — how to do it better, ways to improve.

2. Develop a personal reading plan. Even the apostle Paul continued to read in prison. Paul was making the most of his time. He was a bookaholic. We must also do likewise.

2 Timothy 4:13 “Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come — and the books, especially the parchments.”

3. Spend time with wise people.

Proverbs 13:20 “He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.”

There’s the power of association. You can’t fly with the eagles if you’re going to run with the turkeys. You’ve got to get next to people who will build you up, who know about the things that you want to know about.

4. Learn to ask the right questions.

Proverbs 20:5 “Counsel in the heart of man is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out.”

In the heart of everybody there’s something you can learn, there are some insights you can use because we’ve all had different experiences. A lot of times they’re not there on the surface, you have to draw them out — like drawing water out of a well. How do you draw people out? How do you draw the insights you could use out of people? Ask questions. It’s a wise thing to do.

5. Write down your ideas. The U.S. Air Force did a study and they discovered that we forget 90-95% of everything we hear within 72 hours. Taking notes can help reduce that percentage. The only way you can continually keep growing is to write things down, take notes, so you don’t keep forgetting it.

6. Take advantage of opportunities. There are times that you’re driving to and from work, times when you’re getting ready in the morning, when you’re waiting in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, when you’re exercising — when you’re awake and alert but your mind is not in gear. You could memorize scripture. Make use of conference calls if possible. If you’re sitting in an office, carry a paperback book with you. Use those spare minutes, snatch those fragments of time, make use of them. Read a book. Listen to tapes. Take advantage of the time to keep alert. Don’t just sit back, come home at night, flip on the tv and put your mind in neutral and listen to or watch the TV.

God, when He gave us our minds, gave us one of our greatest gifts. We are responsible to use it and develop it and keep it sharp. It is literally limitless in what we can do if we’ll simply begin to use it and develop it and begin to think. Everything, including how God wants to transform us begins in the mind.

Romans 12: 2 “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

We have been in the ministry for some years now. And as much as we have put our lives into the ministry, there are still a lot of things to be done to spread the good news about the Lord. People are way too distracted by a lot of things. My heart and calling is towards discipling the ladies in our church. I have seen them grow into beautiful women for Christ through the years who are now influencing the generation after them with the same passion. While my husband has been every so passionate as he reaches out to the schools (students and teachers) of the city and Makati, even beyond, whenever he is given a chance.

It was many years ago when I first heard about the End Times Prophecy and actually subscribed to Endtimes Update which is locally distributed. I used to buy that from one of the Christian bookstores I frequent. The last days prophecies from some of the books of the Old Testament to the ones in Revelation are slowly surfacing one after the other. Sooner or later the Beast of Revelation will make its subtle entrance. Giving us Christians, a sense or urgency to spread the good news to people all the more. We are not living just for the here and now. The vanity of things of the world can easily eat us up. These things we surely should not take for granted and ultimately be ready for. The sweet thing about nurturing our relationship with Christ is that He reveals more of Himself to us as we choose Him in our everyday walk.

JIVE Youth has cooked up this year’s back to school party for 2010. This year’s program is titled “I CAN… My Future Decided.” It is going to be held at the JIVE Youth Center in Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati City this coming Saturday, June 12, 2010.

Make sure you tag your friends along with you. All students from high school students to college are all welcome. Even those who just graduated and are going through the stress of employment screenings are welcome. You will be surprised how young professionals find themselves thrive in our youth events. Get the word out and I hope you guys make it.

JIVE Youth is the youth ministry of Sumlong Baptist Church – Makati. The official site of JIVE Youth has been up for some years now. But we weren’t able to work on the site as much. Last Friday, as one of the youth leaders submitted yet another article for publishing, I was inspired to work on its promotion by creating its very own fan page on Facebook. So I dropped all the online tasks I intended to finish. I have tons, from book reviews to research about diet pills that work and whatnots, and finally worked on the fan page. The purpose is to reach more young people and lead them to a personal relationship in Christ even through this high tech avenue – the internet.

Last Sunday we celebrated our local church’s 7th anniversary! SBC-Makati has come a long way since it started. As a church family, we are continually praying for God’s leading towards the property that we hope to transfer to. We have a great God and nothing is impossible with Him.

Although the place that we are renting is big, its downstairs is still a wet market. Not a very pleasing passage for those who would have to come up to attend our services. Despite this downside to our location, we are blessed to have a church family that does not care less and practically disregarded the minor inconvenience. Congratulations on our 7th year, SBC-Makati! I definitely have come to love this family that the Lord has sent us to.

Pastor Enrick Hintay was the one who preached on our 7th anniversary celebration and we were challenged and encouraged to continually pray for God’s hand upon us, as we pray towards reaching more people in our community. My husband and I rendered a special number, “More Than Wonderful.” I was actually second guessing myself because I have had this nasty sore throat and bad case of colds. But I think that the multivitamins that I have been taking lately must have taken effect.  Because I felt a lot better that day.

We pray that the Lord will continue to bless SBC-Makati abundantly and its workers to press on towards glorifying God as we serve as one body in Christ. Each of the members of the body is purposed for something and I pray that we will continue to edify each other as we have always done and give God the glory.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11

I feel so blessed. The Lord has definitely made Himself known to me and my family several times over, all these years. There is truth in His promises. I am mighty proud of the hubby especially for keeping to God’s calling of Him to pastor SBC-Makati, despite some odds along the way. And when I say odds, they were not just minor ones. They were huge enough that we would cry over them in prayer for years! But God saw us through. He saw our hearts. My husband who has always been the diplomatic type would always choose to step back and have the Lord fight for us and that He did!

The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD,
And He delights in his way.
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down;
For the LORD upholds him with His hand.
Psalm 37:23-24

If there is anything about the ministry, it is definitely NOT FOR THE FAINT-HEARTED. Although there were challenges, everything will be bearable when your calling is clear and your purpose is set before you. Despite my being driven person, I found grace in the Lord for me to be able to submit to my husband despite the many hardships. I have several thoughts on this but I’d rather not spill everything because I know my God is bigger than all the imperfect things in this world.

God’s grace came through the people who believed in us enough. My Tita Sally, who has been like a second mom to me. My sister in Christ, Ashley for ministering to my heart during the toughest of times. Then the Lord led the hubby and me to this blessing of a person by the name of Neil Maranan who has essentially taught us how to monetize our blogs. And the rest, as they say is history. Right now, I am very much grateful to my boss who is in the other side of the world. My VA job has been a great blessing to our family. I am happy that I don’t need to look through pa job listings and get a physical job. This remote job that I have is what’s best for our family’s set up.

The Lord has been ever so gracious and His blessings just keep coming. All of these are tangible manifestations of how God can be ever so real in a person’s life. The intangible though, is still what’s best. The personal relationship, the peace that can only come from Him. Priceless.

Although we were pretty set on homeschooling our son around this time last year, we never thought we would enjoy it this much. Our 4 year old has been reading for at least a couple of months now. He started learning the letter sounds when he was 2 but now he is reading smoothly already.

In less than a month our son will graduate from SOT’s Preschool with Ace and Christi program and I cannot be more thrilled! Last Friday was his very first rehearsal for the graduation. He was able to practice with the other soon to graduate kids. Here is a clip from their rehearsal.

As for me, schedule has been busy, as usual.  But busy good, save for the fact that I have practically traded  a treadmill for a figure trimmer disc- but here I am still struggling at it. I have said that this year will put a stop to my sedentary lifestyle. I’m working at it, slowly but surely. The hubby has been busy as well. He is officially the director for this year’s upcoming Summer Camp, among other things.

We will be broadcasting our church service on the internet tomorrow a 10:30 AM and our church, Sumulong Baptist Church Makati, hopes to make this available every week. Our goal is to minister to our church members and their relatives who are abroad and we also hope to reach out to new people.

The live broadcast of SBC Makati’s church service do not intend to replace physical attendance at church. It is an out reach effort to those who will tune in and a ministry to its members. The exposure will also force us to increase the standards on how we conduct our regular worship service.

It is always a joy for me to join Jeff, whenever I get the chance to, when he goes to minister to the youth of Makati. Here, he is in action. In the very high school I graduated from. Although it isn’t quite the same since I graduated some 10+ years ago. Senator Salonga no longer owns it, for one. The first time I visited, it was almost nostalgic. Even though I studied there for only a couple of years, it still amounted to something. Because the few good friends I have, I found there. The main building was still there and few others mushroomed, plus the few nice facilities to boot.

It just overwhelms my heart whenever I think that the Lord has actually allowed for us to go back to minister to these young people. You will be surprised of the percentage of our youth having to endure dysfunctional families that brings about devastating effects to their self esteem.

Even as we partner with the teachers as we influence them towards a better life, I am blessed as I see my very own husband’s burden for these precious souls. Even though what he does may not sound as big as that of business plan consultants’, I actually see it to be a lot bigger than that. This is why I totally respect Jeff’s steadfast spirit, especially during those times that he has got to brave strong rains and commute. My prayer is that these kids will respond positively to the teachings that Jeff imparts with them every week.

Working with the youth has always been interesting. It is way easier to be able to relate to them now that I am outside the box and yet I still can so understand them because I have been there once before. God’s grace has allowed me to see these young people through His loving eyes. Firm enough to rebuke but gentle enough to encourage. It is not the easiest to be an adolescent, even a young pro. The dating game and all the hassles of courtship, which if practiced outside God’s umbrella brings about haste and destruction. Not to mention heartaches and everything else in between.

Last Sunday, I overheard some of my girls talking about promise rings. What is a promise ring, anyway? Unlike keepsake rings, promise rings are usually given to each other by two people who commit to no sex before marriage. I was not too keen to nose around that time I heard my girls but I was really curious if they are wearing those rings to symbolize their commitment as they become accountable to each other or if there was someone special who gave that promise ring to that girl concerned. I know my girls pass by this page from time to time so I might just receive an SMS soon after I get this post live.

A week from today, I will be experiencing one of the busiest weeks of my year. As a missions team from Sagemont Church in Houston, Texas composed of at least 27 individuals arrives on Tuesday, there are a series of evangelistic events lined up starting on Wednesday afternoon until the 29th of this month.

On the 22nd, we will be conducting a basketball mini-league and we are targeting to come up with four teams, one of which is a team of college students from Houston, and gather a big audience and get the opportunity to share the gospel in the event.

On the 24th, the missions team, in partnership with Breaking Point Foundation and different churches networked with our mother church Sumulong Baptist Church, will be conducting two Breaking Point programs, one in the morning at Manggahan High School and one right after lunch at Santolan High School, both in Pasig City. In these events, students will have the opportunity to watch and hear a clear presentation of the gospel and respond to it.

On the 26th, the team, together with twelve local volunteers (including me and my wife), will be flying to Puerto Princesa, Palawan for a scheduled two-day Breaking Point programs at Palawan National High School which has at least 6,000 students.

Here are some prayer requests as we conduct these events:

1. Pray that we would continue to find favor in the eyes of the school administrators we are dealing with and that we will be one in our purpose – to keep the students away from drug or substance abuse by introducing them to a right relationship with God.

2. Pray that the spiritual blindness of those who will hear the gospel would be removed and that they would clearly understand the need for God in their lives.

3. Pray for strength for all participants in this week-long evangelistic campaign.

4. Pray also for traveling mercies.

A Chinese philosopher once said, “Give a man a fish and he’ll eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will eat for the rest of his life.”

The same concept is the inspiration behind Bayan-anihan—Gawad Kalinga’s (GK) food sufficiency arm, which was established to eradicate hunger by empowering poor families to produce their own food via backyard or organic farming. It advocates for a hunger-free Philippines under the battlecry, “Goodbye Gutom! Empower the poor. Eradicate hunger.”

As its main objective, Bayan-anihan (BA) aims to launch 2,500 farms in the next three years to feed at least 500,000 people for life with the aid of multi-sectoral partnership among GK and the Department of Agriculture (DA), agricultural schools, local government units (LGUs), non-government organizations (NGOs), major corporations and the youth.

During its soft launch last March, a ceremonial planting day was held simultaneously in GK communities all over Luzon— including Metro Manila, Ilocos Region, Cordillera Administrative Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, and Southern Tagalog.

Two months since its first planting day/soft launch, 24 metric tons have already been harvested from 115 GK-BA farms. This bountiful yield serves as a great opportunity to celebrate Bayan-anihan’s formal launch to the public on July 15 with a big ceremonial harvest. At the same time, it signals the beginning of the nationwide fight against starvation in the country through its upcoming activities and programs.

On this day, the official Bayan-anihan song and website will be unveiled, and there will be speeches by Sec. Arthur Yap, Department of Agriculture Secretary; Tony Meloto, Gawad Kalinga founder; and John Concepcion, Unilever RFM Ice Cream–Selecta Managing Director and CEO. A parade of vegetables and fruits will be staged by the Gawad Kalinga community, and outstanding Bayan-anihan caretaker teams will be honored.

Young adults, teens, and children can play games, while the adults will have a cooking session using the harvested vegetables. As a fitting end to the ceremonial harvest day, delicious and nutritious meals made with the harvested vegetables will be shared by everyone.

Since this is a multi-sectoral movement, the national and local government units, schools, corporations and individuals, and the NGO’s, and the youth can be involved in several ways.

The government can help out by providing infrastructure, land and water, and giving funds for farm inputs. Schools can make training programs as part of the curriculum for faculty and students and can even train the community people as part of their practicum. Any corporation or individual, on the other hand, can sponsor or adopt a farm for P150,000, which will be enough to feed 30 families. They can also participate during planting days, salu-salo affairs, and other activities. Other NGO’s can also help by leading the implementation of this program in their communities using the Bayan-anihan model.

Lastly, the youth can lend a hand by training and by being one with the community through the planting and harvesting activities. With the youth’s help in sustaining the training, the poor will never have to go hungry again, and it will espouse self-sufficiency for the next generations.

By supporting Bayan-anihan, everyone can develop and polish values like self-worth, hard work, excellence, bayanihan (spirit of teamwork), and care for health and the environment.

Through efforts like this, the seeds of hope are planted in the hearts of many Filipinos. For sure, we can anticipate a prosperous and a food-abundant Philippines in the future.

The JIVE band did a great job today as they played their rendition of Superchick’s “Highschool”. Sing along as you watch this video clip. It was a back to school program they called, “School of the Rock.” The Rock is Jesus. The song encourages students who are going back to school to see the bigger picture and rise above what is usually expected of high school students.

We have to give it to the young people who came this afternoon for the back to school program. In spite of the bad weather and heavy downpour, there were still a lot of youth who came over to the party. They could’ve chosen to stay indoors or stroll in the malls with their families for wholesale tvs, but they all came! This is why malls are crowded this past week, because of the current back to school sale.

Which we’ve forgot to let go
And just like acne our insecurity
Should be something we left with the JV
So here’s to letting go of yearbook photos
Things we kept that hold us down so
